Oscar "Golden Boy" Dela Hoya stopped his "Dream Match" with Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao at the end of the 8th round of their scheduled 12-round fight.

Manny Pacquiao scored a 1-sided TKO over Oscar De La Hoya.

A crowd, estimated at 16,000 or less, filled the venue at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Manny Pacquiao won his last 8 fights, including 2 knockout victories over Erik Morales, and one each against fierce rivals Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez. De la Hoya has only fought 4 times over the last four years, losing twice.

During the weigh-in (Manny Pacquiao at an unbelievable 142 pounds since Freddie Roach had wanted him to weigh in at 145, and De la Hoya at 145 pounds), they faced each other after tipping the scales, but no pushing & shoving.

The odds to this fight had gone up and down over the last 5 days in Vegas. For Manny Pacquiao they’d gone from plus 155 to plus 140, then plus 135 to plus 125, and plus 165 Friday morning to plus 160 the evening before the fight.

It meant that a $100 bet on Pacquiao (47-3-2 with 35 KOs) won $160. The latest odds on De la Hoya (39-5-0 with 30 KOs) showed that a bet of $190 only won $100.

Both fighters went for the knockout.

Manny Pacquiao's coach Freddie Roach had predicted a 9th round stoppage by Manny Pacquiao, and Oscar De la Hoya countered by saying he’d knock Manny Pacquiao out inside five rounds.

Manny Pacquiao is the first Filipino and Asian boxer to win four world titles in different weight divisions. De La Hoya has won ten world titles in 6 different weight classes. Manny Pacquiao is considered the greatest boxer in the planet today – pound for pound.

Manny Pacquiao displayed blinding speed against Oscar de la Hoya during the first five rounds of their Dream Match at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada Saturday. Pacquiao boxed the 10-time world champion as he made full use of the ring to lead the match on scores.

The Filipino tagged de la Hoya with a good left straight to the face of de la Hoya in the first round. The Mexican American already suffered a small cut to the nose bridge by the second round. In the third round, Pacquiao started attacking the de la Hoya with body shots as the Golden Boy struggled to find his timing.

In the fourth, the Filipino continued to outfox the former Olympian. In the fifth round, the two exchanged a barrage of body punches.

Pacquiao is scheduled to face Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, Inc., the bout will be a 12-round, non-title fight contested at the 147-pound welterweight limit. Although Pacquiao goes into the fight widely recognized as the leading pound-for-pound boxer in the world, some boxing pundits have speculated that 147 pounds could be too far above his natural weight against the larger De La Hoya.

Many boxing analysts believe the fight will favor De La Hoya, and consider the fight a mismatch due to De La Hoya's size advantage. Bets have already been taken with De La Hoya as the heavy favourite. Training for the mega fight Oscar hired legendary trainers Angelo Dundee, Nacho Beristain, and young boxing talent Edwin Valero. Oscar told the news that his team is unbeatable, while Freddie Roach said, "No one is going to be able to help Oscar pull the trigger when he faces Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6". While the odds are still with Oscar the mega fight will be still fight of the year and possibly break pay per view records in boxing history.

Pacquiao will receive $15 to 30 million (share of the pay-per-view), plus a guaranteed amount. Tickets reportedly sold out just hours after they went on sale. The total gate revenues were said to be nearly $17 million dollars. That amount would give the bout has the second largest gate revenue in boxing history (after the De La Hoya-Mayweather Jr. fight in May 5, 2007 which generated $18.4 million in gate revenue).

Filipinos set aside political problems Sunday and celebrated boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao’s sensational WBC superfeatherweight victory over Mexico’s Juan Miguel Marquez.

Construction workers in Manila’s Makati financial district crowded around a radio which broadcast the fight live and erupted in cheers as judges announced a split decision in favour of the Filipino, making him world champion.

The military, which earlier declared a special ceasefire to allow soldiers to watch the fight, put up a giant screen at the army headquarters.

President Gloria Arroyo, who has rejected calls to step down over alleged corruption, watched the match from the presidential palace with family and friends.

‘Once again, the Pacman has proven that the Filipino can excel in any endeavor and that we can all be united as a nation for the interest of our country,’ Arroyo spokeswoman Lorelei Fajardo said in a statement, referring to the boxer’s nickname.

‘The president has watched the game and she’s very happy for Manny’s victory,’ she said.

Arroyo also personally greeted Pacquiao on the telephone, she said.

‘This was the toughest fight for me,’ Pacquiao said over Manila radio station DZBB. ‘This fight was not just for me, this was for the Filipino people.’

‘Pacquiao was so good. We were initially afraid he was going to lose, but he fell Marquez in the earlier rounds and all was good,’ said Hector, a laborer as he held a beer in one hand.

Separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels who are negotiating a peace settlement with the government also eased their patrols to watch the fight.

MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said guerrillas were also told to enjoy the fight, and rally round a fellow Filipino.

‘There are no longer Muslims and Christians. Manny is a great Filipino today. Today, there is no war. We are busy celebrating,’ Kabalu said from his base in southern Mindanao island.

In a sizzling rematch of their 2004 fight, which ended in a draw, one judge gave Marquez a 115-112 decision while another saw Pacquiao the winner by the same margin. The decisive third judge gave the bout to Pacquiao 114-113.

Pacquiao was expected to receive nearly five million dollars from the battle, with Marquez taking home about 1.5 million dollars.

Manny Pacquiao is new WBC Super Featherweight King!

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao snatched the WBC super featherweight belt after outpointing Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez via a controversial split at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nevada, Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Two of the judges saw it 115-112, 114-113 for Pacquiao, while the third scored 115-112 for Marquez.

Aside from being crowned as WBC super featherweight champ, Pacquiao will be awarded with the Ring Magazine super featherweight belt.

The Filipino bomber had an awkward start during the opening rounds, absorbing a couple of straight right hands to the face. The second hit had him wobbling in Round 2.



Pacquiao, however, charged back in Round 3 by knocking down the Mexican champ with a left straight to the face. Marquez beat the count and survived the round.

The Mexican fought on, using his counterpunching skills to score a right hook and a right straight against Pacquiao during Round 5.

The fighters clashed heads in Round 7, opening a gash just above Pacquiao’s right eyelid. Marquez also suffered a nasty cut below the right eyebrow.

Both fighters were bleeding in the next two rounds, with referee Kenny Bayless sending the Mexican to the ring doctor twice.

Pacquiao upped the tempo in Round 10, wobbling Marquez with a hard left.

Marquez rallied during the last two rounds. He, however, failed to get the nod of the judges.

Prior the rematch, Pacquiao was coming of a win over Marco Antonio Berrera, whom he defeated via unanimous decision in October 2007.

Marquez, on the other hand, successfully defended his title against Rocky Juarez in Novermber 2007. He won the title from Barrera in March 2007.

The rematch between Pacquiao and Marquez took four years in the making since the two fought into a controversial draw in 2004.

Manny Pacquiao to Pinoys: Pray for Win on Sunday

Filipino boxing champ Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao appealed to Filipinos to pray for his victory in his bout with Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night in Las Vegas (Sunday in the Philippines).

Interviewed on dzBB radio Friday morning, Pacquiao also promised Marquez's Mexican compatriots a "good fight," which organizers dubbed Pacquiao-Marquez II, Unfinished Business.

"Sana sama-sama tayo magdasal para magtagumpay tayong mga Pilipino ngayong Linggo (I hope we can all pray together so the Filipino will triumph this Sunday)," he said when asked to give Filipinos at home a message.


When asked for his message to the Mexican people, he said he can promise "a good fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez."

"Good luck sa aming dalawa (Good luck to both of us)," Pacquiao added.

Likewise, Pacquiao said he does not expect problems during the weigh-in on Saturday, saying he has made the 130-pound limit.

But Pacquiao declined to make predictions about the fight, particularly when asked what round he expects to knock out Marquez.

"Mahirap magbigay ng prediction (It is difficult to make predictions)," he said.
