Oscar "Golden Boy" Dela Hoya stopped his "Dream Match" with Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao at the end of the 8th round of their scheduled 12-round fight.

Manny Pacquiao scored a 1-sided TKO over Oscar De La Hoya.

A crowd, estimated at 16,000 or less, filled the venue at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Manny Pacquiao won his last 8 fights, including 2 knockout victories over Erik Morales, and one each against fierce rivals Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez. De la Hoya has only fought 4 times over the last four years, losing twice.

During the weigh-in (Manny Pacquiao at an unbelievable 142 pounds since Freddie Roach had wanted him to weigh in at 145, and De la Hoya at 145 pounds), they faced each other after tipping the scales, but no pushing & shoving.

The odds to this fight had gone up and down over the last 5 days in Vegas. For Manny Pacquiao they’d gone from plus 155 to plus 140, then plus 135 to plus 125, and plus 165 Friday morning to plus 160 the evening before the fight.

Manny Pacquiao displayed blinding speed against Oscar de la Hoya during the first five rounds of their Dream Match at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada Saturday. Pacquiao boxed the 10-time world champion as he made full use of the ring to lead the match on scores.

The Filipino tagged de la Hoya with a good left straight to the face of de la Hoya in the first round. The Mexican American already suffered a small cut to the nose bridge by the second round. In the third round, Pacquiao started attacking the de la Hoya with body shots as the Golden Boy struggled to find his timing.

In the fourth, the Filipino continued to outfox the former Olympian. In the fifth round, the two exchanged a barrage of body punches.

Pacquiao is scheduled to face Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, Inc., the bout will be a 12-round, non-title fight contested at the 147-pound welterweight limit. Although Pacquiao goes into the fight widely recognized as the leading pound-for-pound boxer in the world, some boxing pundits have speculated that 147 pounds could be too far above his natural weight against the larger De La Hoya.

Many boxing analysts believe the fight will favor De La Hoya, and consider the fight a mismatch due to De La Hoya's size advantage. Bets have already been taken with De La Hoya as the heavy favourite. Training for the mega fight Oscar hired legendary trainers Angelo Dundee, Nacho Beristain, and young boxing talent Edwin Valero. Oscar told the news that his team is unbeatable, while Freddie Roach said, "No one is going to be able to help Oscar pull the trigger when he faces Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6". Filipinos set aside political problems Sunday and celebrated boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao’s sensational WBC superfeatherweight victory over Mexico’s Juan Miguel Marquez.

Construction workers in Manila’s Makati financial district crowded around a radio which broadcast the fight live and erupted in cheers as judges announced a split decision in favour of the Filipino, making him world champion.

The military, which earlier declared a special ceasefire to allow soldiers to watch the fight, put up a giant screen at the army headquarters.

President Gloria Arroyo, who has rejected calls to step down over alleged corruption, watched the match from the presidential palace with family and friends.

‘Once again, the Pacman has proven that the Filipino can excel in any endeavor and that we can all be united as a nation for the interest of our country,’ Arroyo spokeswoman Lorelei Fajardo said in a statement, referring to the boxer’s nickname.

‘The president has watched the game and she’s very happy for Manny’s victory,’ she said.

Arroyo also personally greeted Pacquiao on the telephone, she said.

‘This was the toughest fight for me,’ Pacquiao said over Manila radio station DZBB. ‘This fight was not just for me, this was for the Filipino people.’

‘Pacquiao was so good. We were initially afraid he was going to lose, but he fell Marquez in the earlier rounds and all was good,’ said Hector, a laborer as he held a beer in one hand.

Separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels who are negotiating a peace settlement with the government also eased their patrols to watch the fight.

MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said guerrillas were also told to enjoy the fight, and rally round a fellow Filipino.

‘There are no longer Muslims and Christians. Manny is a great Filipino today. Today, there is no war. We are busy celebrating,’ Kabalu said from his base in southern Mindanao island.

In a sizzling rematch of their 2004 fight, which ended in a draw, one judge gave Marquez a 115-112 decision while another saw Pacquiao the winner by the same margin. The decisive third judge gave the bout to Pacquiao 114-113.

Pacquiao was expected to receive nearly five million dollars from the battle, with Marquez taking home about 1.5 million dollars.

Manny Pacquiao is new WBC Super Featherweight King!

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao snatched the WBC super featherweight belt after outpointing Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez via a controversial split at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nevada, Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Two of the judges saw it 115-112, 114-113 for Pacquiao, while the third scored 115-112 for Marquez.

Aside from being crowned as WBC super featherweight champ, Pacquiao will be awarded with the Ring Magazine super featherweight belt.

The Filipino bomber had an awkward start during the opening rounds, absorbing a couple of straight right hands to the face. The second hit had him wobbling in Round 2.



Pacquiao, however, charged back in Round 3 by knocking down the Mexican champ with a left straight to the face. Marquez beat the count and survived the round.

The Mexican fought on, using his counterpunching skills to score a right hook and a right straight against Pacquiao during Round 5.

The fighters clashed heads in Round 7, opening a gash just above Pacquiao’s right eyelid. Marquez also suffered a nasty cut below the right eyebrow.

Both fighters were bleeding in the next two rounds, with referee Kenny Bayless sending the Mexican to the ring doctor twice.

Pacquiao upped the tempo in Round 10, wobbling Marquez with a hard left.

Marquez rallied during the last two rounds. He, however, failed to get the nod of the judges.

Prior the rematch, Pacquiao was coming of a win over Marco Antonio Berrera, whom he defeated via unanimous decision in October 2007.

Marquez, on the other hand, successfully defended his title against Rocky Juarez in Novermber 2007. He won the title from Barrera in March 2007.

The rematch between Pacquiao and Marquez took four years in the making since the two fought into a controversial draw in 2004.

Manny Pacquiao to Pinoys: Pray for Win on Sunday

Filipino boxing champ Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao appealed to Filipinos to pray for his victory in his bout with Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night in Las Vegas (Sunday in the Philippines).

Interviewed on dzBB radio Friday morning, Pacquiao also promised Marquez's Mexican compatriots a "good fight," which organizers dubbed Pacquiao-Marquez II, Unfinished Business.

"Sana sama-sama tayo magdasal para magtagumpay tayong mga Pilipino ngayong Linggo (I hope we can all pray together so the Filipino will triumph this Sunday)," he said when asked to give Filipinos at home a message.


When asked for his message to the Mexican people, he said he can promise "a good fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez."

"Good luck sa aming dalawa (Good luck to both of us)," Pacquiao added.

Likewise, Pacquiao said he does not expect problems during the weigh-in on Saturday, saying he has made the 130-pound limit.

But Pacquiao declined to make predictions about the fight, particularly when asked what round he expects to knock out Marquez.

"Mahirap magbigay ng prediction (It is difficult to make predictions)," he said.

MANUEL MARQUEZ- MANNY PACQUIAO FRENZY

WHEN you get right down to it, it doesn't really matter that Juan Manuel Marquez is from Mexico and Manny Pacquiao is from the Philippines and their respective countries view their rematch tomorrow night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas as some kind of statement of national supremacy.

Truth is, what makes this pay-per-view matchup worth the $49.95 fee is the competitive fire that burns within both men who were left frustrated when their first fight ended in an unsatisfying draw. That was four years ago on a night when Marquez overcame three knock downs in the first round to dominate three-quarters of the exciting bout. Both want to prove they are the superior boxer when the two meet again for Marquez's WBC super featherweight title.


"Pacquiao-Marquez I epitomized the best of the sport of boxing Ultimate-Fighting-Championship and on anyone's list they are among the best pound-for-pound in the sport," Mark Taffet, HBO's pay-per-view boss, said. "These two guys carry a nation on their shoulders and that's what makes it even more special. We know we are going to have a great fight and one that will be remembered for years to come."

Certainly, their first fight is memorable. Pacquiao dropped Marquez three times in the first round, all the damage done with a straight left-hand from the hard-punching southpaw. Marquez weathered the round and quickly figured out how to elude the left-hand. From there he used his counter-punching skills to out-box Pacquiao the rest of the fight.

"I went down three times, but I got up because of the great condition that I was in at the time," Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KOs) said. "But it's been four years. Manny Pacquiao became better. I have become better. It's going to be a totally different fight. It's going to be a great fight."

Pacquiao (45-3-2, 35 KOs) was regarded as a one-handed fighter then, but under trainer Freddie Roach he has added a dangerous right-hand while sharpening his overall skills. "He's a much more complete fighter now and he's stronger," Roach said.

After his draw with Marquez in 2004, Pacquiao went on to several big-money bouts, winning two in his trilogy with Erik Morales and out-pointing Marco Antonio Barrera last October. Marquez wound up losing his titles in a low-paying fight in Indonesia, but resurrected his career with wins over Barrera and Rocky Juarez.

"I'm expecting Marquez at his 100 percent best," Pacquiao said. "He's hungry for a victory in this fight because he's the only Mexican left who has a chance to beat me. He wants to make a name by beating me. I won't let him do that."

Both men have trained tremendously hard for the bout. Pacquiao has spent two months at Roach's wild-card gym in Hollywood, while Marquez has brutalized his body on the high mountains of Mexico. "You could put these guys in the ring 10 times and you'll always have a great fight," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

Prediction: Marquez by split decision.

Meanwhile, undefeated James Moore(14-0, 10 KOs), a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, faces J.C. Candelo (27-9-4, 18 KOs) of Colombia in the 10-round main event tomorrow night in a pre-St. Patrick's Day boxing card at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

In the co-feature, New York junior middleweight Pawel "Raging Bull" Wolak (19-0, 13 KOs) of Poland squares off against Dupre "Total Package" Strickland (18-2-1, 7 KOs) of Shreveport, La.

In addition to boxing, live Irish music will be performed by the band "Big Girl's Blouse."

Parents of Manny Pacquiao Confident That He Will Defeat Marquez !

Unlike Manny Pacquiao's previous bouts, his mother Dionisia said she is not nervous about his impending fight with Mexican boxer Juan Miguel Marquez this weekend.

Pacquiao will take a shot at Marquez’ World Boxing Council's (WBC) super featherweight title when they clash in Las Vegas Sunday morning (Manila time).

Dionisia said she is confident her son will defeat Marquez. So does her husband, Rosalio, who predicts his son will demolish the Mexican.


"I have confidence in my son. I know he will win this fight," Rosalio said.

But Dionisia said even if she is sure about Pacquiao's victory, she is asking Filipinos to pray for him.

"To all our fellow Filipinos, please pray hard for Manny's victory. This is the only help I'm asking," she said in the vernacular.

"Siyempre, iba talaga yung may kasamang dasal sa Panginoon [Of course, it is different if you accompany it with prayers to the Lord]," she said.

Dionisia said Pacquiao had prepared hard for this fight.

Asked if Pacquiao would take Marquez down during the early rounds of the fight, Dionisia said she would not want to speculate.

"I don't want to speculate whether Manny would knock Marquez out in this or that round. It's hard to tell because they are both experienced and good fighters," Dionisia said.

One thing Dionisia said she takes pride in is that her son's fights have always united Filipinos.

"Parang tumitigil ang ikot ng mundo, bumababa ang krimen, at pansamantala nating nakakalimutan ang away pulitika sa tuwing may laban si Manny. Kaya malaking bagay ito para sa bansa pag mananalo siya [It is like the world stops turning, crime drops, and political bickering is temporarily forgotten whenever Manny has a bout. Despite her confidence, Dionisia said that she will not watch the live television broadcast of her son’s bout and will instead attend mass at the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage Parish here before proceeding to her Pacquiao’s home in Lagao village.

"I'll be inside the prayer room for the duration of the fight. I'll just watch the replay," she said.

THE "ACCIDENTAL ARTISTA." Kuwento ni Charlene, 16 years na pala siya sa showbiz. Akala niya kasi noon, matapos manalo as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1994 at mag-compete that same year sa Miss Universe Pageant na ginanap din dito sa Pilipinas, one or two years lang siyang tatagal sa show business.



"Akala ko talaga accidental artista or celebrity lang ako," nakangiti niyang pagbabalik-alaala. "Pero until now, nandito pa rin ako, inspirado pa ring magtrabaho."



Hindi ba tumanggi ang husband niyang si Aga Muhlach na muli siyang mag-show?



"Nagulat nga ako na may VTR pala siya. Na sinabi pa niyang nagdasal siya na makapasok ako sa ganitong programa. He's really happy for me," sambit ni Charlene.



Pagmamalaki pa ni Aga sa VTR, makikilala raw ng mga manonood kung gaano kabait at kahusay si Charlene bilang isang wife, mother to their children, and daughter to her parents.



ATASHA AND ANDRES. Speaking of their children, Atasha and Andres, tanggap na raw ng mga ito ang trabaho nila ni Aga bilang mga artista. In fact, akala nga raw ng mga ito ay kasing-normal lang ng kahit na anong activity sa bahay ang mga trabahong ginagawa nilang mag-asawa.



"Noong mag-taping nga ako ng OBB [opening billboard] ng Proudly Filipina, gusto nilang sumama, kaya lang pinigilan ko," kuwento ni Charlene. "Sabi ko baka magulo sila, pero sa mga susunod na taping, isasama ko na sila."



Kuwento pa ni Charlene, normal na rin nga raw sa kambal yung pakaway-kaway sa fans. "Happy sila na lagi silang kumakaway at bumabati sa mga taong nakikita nila sa set o kahit saan kami pumunta. Feeling kasi nila, kilala sila ng lahat.



"Noon ngang pumunta kami sa States, they say ‘hi!' to everybody dahil akala nila, ganoon dapat. Hindi pa nila alam ang magnitude ng trabaho namin ni Aga. Akala nila naglalaro lang sila, like noong nagsu-shoot kami ng Jollibee commercial, akala nila we're playing with them," nangingiting lahad ni Charlene.



Tuluyan na ba nilang ipapasok ni Aga sa showbiz ang kambal after gumawa ng TV commercial?



"Ayaw na muna namin," sagot ni Charlene. "Sa commercial, very selective kami ni Aga, sa Jollibee lang talaga kami pumayag dahil ang laki ng nagawa ng Jolibee sa amin. Yung pag-aartista, siguro kapag nakatapos na sila ng college at gusto pa nila, hindi namin sila pipigilan. As of now, we have to protect and shelter them as much as possible. We want them to live a normal life."



May ipinapakita na bang talents ang kambal?



"Atasha plays the piano very well. Andres loves to dance. Nagko-choreo na nga siya ng sarili niya. Minsan nga, tinanong ko siya kung ano ang ginagawa niya dahil tahimik siya. Sabi niya, he's concentrating daw on his choreography. Nakakatuwa! Wala namang nagtuturo sa kanya. Biro nga sa akin, namana raw siguro ni Andres ang hilig ko sa pagsayaw,"pagmamalaki ni Charlene about their twins.

"Saka we're leaving kasi, kami ni Aga at ang kambal, for the States next month. Gusto naming manood ng fight ni Manny Pacquiao, kung makabibili pa kami ng tickets. Kaya sana, may mabili pa kami.



"Pero hindi magtatagal si Aga. Mauuna siyang bumalik dito, kasi tatapusin niya ang movie nila ni Anne Curtis, ang Waiting For You. Me and the twins will stay in the States. Matagal-tagal na rin kasi akong hindi nakakabisita sa relatives namin doon. Pero hindi rin naman kami gaanong magtatagal, kasi nga mag-a-advanced taping lang ako ng Proudly Filipina, enough hanggang sa makabalik kami ng kambal."



OF BERNARD BONNIN AND BURNING BRIDGES. Tinantiya muna namin si Charlene kung sasagot ng personal question hinggil sa daddy niya, si Bernard Bonnin, na meron daw personal request sa kanya. Ibinulong na lamang namin sa kanya ang tanong, at ang sagot niya:
