Our Very Own Ramiele Malubay, Makes it to Top 50 on American Idol 7!

For American Idol 7 Hollywood week, one hundred and sixty-four contestants from the auditions traveled to Hollywood to sing in front of the judges for a spot in the top fifty. During the first two days of Hollywood week, every contestant got a chance to sing without the fear of getting cut. Contestants were either put straight through to the final day of Hollywood week or given a chance to sing for their lives in a second round.

For the first time ever, contestants were allowed to play instruments during

Hollywood week. Brooke White was the first contestant to take advantage of this opportunity by playing a keyboard while she sang. The gamble paid off for Brooke, as all three judges were impressed and sent her straight through to the final day of Hollywood week.

Lorena Pinot, Amy Flynn, Leo Marlowe, Alisha Dixon, Michael Sanfilippo, Alysa Coco, and Shaun Barrowes did not fair as well and were told they would need to compete in the second chance round. Jake Mellema played drums, and Simon Cowell said, “It was a horrible, horrible song choice. It was a horrible, horrible presentation. There was absolutely nothing redeeming in it, other than that we stopped it early.”

David Hernandez sang “Love The One You’re With,” and Simon Cowell called it one of the best auditions that they had heard all day. A week before Hollywood week Amanda Overmyer was in a major car wreck. Amanda sang “Light My Fire.” Amanda received a pass to the final round from the judges. Buck Smith, Cardin McKinney, Natashia Blach, Ghaleb Emachah were all told that they would have to try again in the second chance round.

Josiah Leming sang and played keyboard. Simon Cowell said, “I think out of all the auditions, this is the one I’m going to remember.” Josiah received a unanimous vote from the judges to go straight through to the final day. Danny Noriega, Ramiele Malubay, Carly Smithson, Michael Johns, David Cook, Robbie Carrico, and Colton Berry also earned passes to the final day. Jessica Brown, Perrie Cataldo, Syesha Mercado, Kyle Ensley were all told they would have to sing in the second chance round. In all, forty-eight contestants got a free pass to the final round.

One hundred and sixteen contestants competed in the second chance round. Suzanne Toon, Perrie Cataldo, Amy Flynn, and Angela Martin were some of the contestants cut, while Kristy Lee Cook and Jeffrey Lampkin made it to the final day.

On the final day of auditions, contestants sang with three background singers. David Archuleta, Kyle Ensley, Syesha Mercado, Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, and A’siah Epperson all made it to the top fifty. Jeffrey Lampkin, Joey Catalano, and Brooke Helvie were three of the contestants cut.

Josiah Leming, who had stood out in the first round, gave the final audition of Hollywood week. A behind-the-scenes segment showed that Josiah’s practice with the band had not gone well, and he had less than two hours of sleep. For his audition, Josiah asked the band to leave so that he could take the stage by himself. Josiah Leming sang “Stand By Me.” The judges were not impressed and called it his weakest audition. Even though Josiah faltered on his final performance, the judges put him through based on his previous performances.

On the next episode of American Idol, the judges will narrow the contestants down from fifty to the top twenty-four semi-finalists.
