ABS-CBN & GMA-7 TV Ratings: ‘Only You’ is #1; ‘Survivor Philippines Season 2: Palau′ Lost in the Game

On its final week, Only You of ABS-CBN 2 led the chase as the most watched primetime show natiowide, beating strong contenders both from network. Grabbing 35.6%, the Koreanovela remake placed itself on the no. 1 spot.

Tayong Dalawa was the silver medalist 34.9%, a 0.1% lead over Darna which was able to nab a 34.8% rating. the Pinay superheroine inched out May Bukas Pa which slipped to the no. 4 position with 34.4%.

Survivor Philippines Season 2: Palau was nowhere to be found in the primetime show rankings, because I think it's because people are disappointed in the mushy pilot episode of Survivor Philippines.

KC Concepcion's MMK Episode Gains Higher Ratings Over Regine' s MMK (Mega Manila TV Ratings)

GMA-7 daytime and primetime shows continue its dominance over their counterparts in ABS-CBN—at least in Mega Manila.

Eat Bulaga! and Daisy Siete are still holding on to their top positions in the daytime race while Marimar, Joaquin Bordado, Kamandag, 24 Oras, and Coffee Prince refuse to step out of the Top 5 positions in the primetime race.

Last Friday, February 22, Regine Velasquez's second appearance on Maalaala Mo Kaya took the tenth spot with 13.4 percent. KC Concepcion's episode, which was shown the previous week, also took the No. 10 position but rated higher with 17.3 percent.

ABS-CBN's delayed telecast of the 80th Oscar Awards generated a rating of 11.5 percent, which is only good for 13th place. The prestigious award-giving body, which named No Country For Old Men as best picture, was also telecast live over Velvet, a cable channel.

Eat Bulaga! is still the No. 1 daytime show during Saturdays taking a very high 27.4 percent rating on February 23. StarTalk was a far second with 18.4 percent followed by Takeshi's Castle with 18.3 percent and Wish Ko Lang with 16. 7 percent. Wowowee and Pinoy Records tied at No. 5 with identical 14.6 percent rating.

In the primetime race, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho lorded it over with 35.5 percent; followed by Bitoy's Funnierst Videos with 33.5 percent, Imbestigador with 28.3 percent; Kakasa Ka Ba Sa Grade 5? with 25.1 percent. Completing the Top 5 is ABS-CBN's XXX with 20.6 percent.

The new reality show of ABS-CBN (tie-up with Del Monte's Fit 'n Right juice), Got 2B Fit Challenge, debuted at No. 9 with 10.7 percent.

Meanwhile, the rerun of the Richard Gutierrez-Angel Locsin Valentine movie I Will Always Love You topped the daytime race last Sunday, February 24, with 22.9 percent. Also in the Top 5 are Showbiz Central (16.8 percent), SOP (16.1 percent), ASAP '08 (15 percent), and The Buzz (13.1 percent).

Mel & Joey grabbed the No. 1 position in the primetime race with 29.4 percent. Tok! Tok! Tok! Isang Milyon Pasok was a close second with 29.1 percent. Taking the third to fifth slots are All Star K, Kap's Amazing Stories, and Ful Haus.

Joaquin Bordado Gets 40+ Ratings, Prinsesa Ng Banyera Moved Up (Mega Manila TV Ratings)

The result on the overnight ratings conducted by AGB Nielsen Philippines from February 19 to 21 among Mega Manila households is basically the same as in the previous weekdays.

While Marimar is strongly holding on to

its No. 1 position in the primetime race, Eat Bulaga! is still in command in the daytime race.

ABS-CBN to Appeal TRO vs Reporting on TV Ratings Manipulation

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation said it will take legal action to reverse a temporary restraining order (TRO) granted by a Quezon City Regional Trial Court preventing the network from airing reports pointing to GMA Network as behind the manipulation of TV ratings published by

AGB Nielsen Media Research.

In an official statement, ABS-CBN said that the TRO "is a prior restraint that violates ABS-CBN's constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms of speech and of the press."

ABS-CBN said that the issue of corruption as brought out by the discovery of the TV ratings manipulation is a matter of clear public interest, and therefore needs to be reported on.

"Corruption is a matter of public interest regardless of where it is found. Thus, whether it be in the executive, legislative, or judicial branches of government, or even the private sector, it is the responsibility of media to expose corruption. All who are liable must be held accountable."

ABS-CBN also deplored the granting of virtual immunity to GMA Network, Inc. "[The TRO] grants GMA Network a virtual immunity from accusation. No person or entity has ever enjoyed such a privilege, not even the highest public officers of the land. It is a clear attempt to cover up and suppress information on the ratings manipulation issue."

QC-RTC Branch 95 presiding judge Henri Jean Paul Inting wrote in his decision that the ratings controversy between GMA Network and ABS-CBN has become a matter for the court to decide.

Inting said that reports by ABS-CBN imputing the ratings manipulation to GMA Network, Inc., will "cause great or irreparable injury to GMA Network’s reputation and good name as GMA Network, by publicity, will be adjudged by the public as guilty thereof."

The judge added that such reports, "may undermine the right of GMA Network to a fair trial and due process."

"I hope ABS-CBN would be quiet now and would respect the TRO issued by the court. If ABS-CBN says nothing against GMA Network, then GMA Network would have nothing to say in response because GMA only acts in defense," said GMA Network legal counsel Gene Asuncion.

GMA Network VP for Legal Dick Perez said that he is glad that the court saw the soundness of GMA Network’s application for TRO. "The issue is not about prior restraint or press freedom but about fairness. A media organization, which is a party litigant in a case, cannot invoke press freedom to present its case in public," Perez said.

The hearing on the application for the issuance of a Writ of Preliminary Injunction has been set on February 19.

The full official statement of ABS-CBN is as follows:

"ABS-CBN is extremely disappointed with the court order which restrains the airing of legitimate news reorts on a matter imbued with a clear public interest.

"Corruption is a matter of public interest regardless of where it is found. Thus, whether it be in the executive, legislative, or judicial branches of government, or even the private sector, it is the responsibility of media to expose corruption. All who are liable must be held accountable.

"The temporary restraining order prohibiting news reports that mention GMA Network, Inc. as the party behind the manipulation of television and radio ratings is a prior restraint that violates ABS-CBN's constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms of speech and of the press. It grants GMA Network a virtual immunity from accusation. No person or entity has ever enjoyed such a privilege, not even the highest public officers of the land. It is a clear attempt to cover up and suppress information on the ratings manipulation issue.

"ABS-CBN further maintains that continued news reporting on GMA Network's involvement in connection with the ratings manipulation will not deprive it of a fair trial inasmuch as the issue pending before the court is the accuracy of the ABS-CBN news report on AGB General Manager Maya Reforma's disclosure in her interview and affidavit submited in court, and not the culpability of GMA Network.

"ABS-CBN will take legal action to reverse and set aside the temporary restraining order."

Kung Fu Kids Rules Nationwide (NUTAM), Marimar Winner in Mega Manila, Metro Manila, and Subs ( Feb. 4-5 Philippine TV Ratings)

There were no changes in the ranking of the Top 5 primetime shows from February 4 to 5. All five shows came from the very strong lineup of GMA-7's Telebabad block: Marimar, Kamandag, Coffee Prince, Zaido, and 24 Oras.

Aside from being the overall No. 1 show, Marimar continues to pull away from the competition, especially now that it has regained its 40-plus ratings.

Marimar posted its highest rating this week last Wednesday with 46 percent. Its rating for the rest of the week are as follows: 40.8 percent (Monday), 45.2 percent (Tuesday), and 45.4 percent (Thursday).

But to date, the soap opera of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes has yet to reach the 50 percent mark, which the Kapuso Network and the fans hope to reach before the drama series ends

in March.

Also consistent in their positions as the second and third most-watched primetime shows are Richard Gutierrez's Kamandag and the Koreanovela Coffee Prince, respectively.

Except for Tuesday, Zaido's hold on the fourth position is also very firm, while the primetime newscast 24 Oras is untouchable at No. 5. Zaido will end its run tonight, February 8.

Meanwhile, four shows from ABS-CBN and one from GMA-7 are occupying the sixth to tenth slots.

Although Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin's Lobo took the sixth slot last Monday, Kung Fu Kids managed to overtake from Tuesday to Thursday. TV Patrol World grabbed the No. 8 position in all nights, except last Tuesday when it dropped to No. 10.

Jake Cuenca and Cesar Montano's Palos, in the meantime, was also firm at No. 9 but it was able to climb to No. 8 Wednesday.

The reality show Kung Ako Ikaw took the last spot on Monday and Tuesday, although it moved to No. 9 on Wednesday.

GMA-7's new horror-drama anthology, E.S.P. starring Iza Calzado, debuted at No. 10 last night, February 7, with 18.6 percent.

In the daytime race, Eat Bulaga! only relinquished its crown once when Daisy Siete managed to pull ahead last Tuesday.

PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) also received AGB Nielsen's ratings in NUTAM (Nationwide Urban TV Audience Measurement), Mega Manila, Metro Manila, and Suburbs from January 27 to February 2, 2008.

ABS-CBN's Kung Fu Kids ruled the NUTAM, which is based on sample homes all over the country, with 37.1 percent. Lobo came in second with 36.3 percent. Third place went to Marimar with 32.7 percent, followed by TV Patrol World with 31.6 percent and Palos with 29.3 percent.

Marimar, on the other hand, leads in Mega, Metro, and Suburbs. The GMA-7 drama series averaged 39.9 percent in Mega Manila, 37.3 percent in Metro, and a very high 44.8 percent in Suburbs.

Kris Aquino Talk About the TV Ratings Issue

Kris Aquino Talk About the Ratings Issue.

"But I think it's another Susan Roces vehicle, but not any of those na na-announce niya."

Sabi niya, ‘Kris naman, in your 30s, ikaw ang title-roler. This opportunity only comes once. Kailan ka babalik? When you are a lola?'

"Sabi niya, spacing lang kasi nakakabaliw lang naman talaga yung nangyari sa akin na naglu-launch ako ng Wheel of Fortune, nagpa-Patayin Sa Sindak Si Barbara, meron akong Boy & Kris, at meron akong commercial na ginagawa. Hindi na talaga ako humihinga, yun talaga. I was sick for 12 straight days because of that. That's really wrong for your health. So, dapat talaga inaayos nang matino yung schedule," lahad ni Kris.

RATINGS ISSUE.

So, text sila, ‘My God! Ang lakas talaga!'

"So, sabi ko, doon ako naniniwala. Sabi ko, ‘Oh, my God! Ratings na nila, malakas pa.' So, sabi ko, siguro malakas talaga. So, kahit na yung parang kahit buong katawan namin kinakagat ng lamok, kasi yung area na yun [location] super malamok, ha. Kasi parang semi-abandoned yung house. Mga ten years na 'ata na hindi nag-i-stay yung mga kids and all. So, may mga areas na parang hinihika-hika na ako and all.

"Tapos eto na lang, siguro the fact na si Tita Susan hindi nag-alinlangang humiga sa highway... Siyempre kahit gitna na, ang daming worms. Promise talaga, nakikita ko yung mga bulate kasi umulan, e. Tapos may mga ipis, may mga ganung kalalaking langgam, ‘tapos po pinagpag nila, inisprayan nila, okay. No choice, higa ako. Yun ang nakita ko sa kanya, yung professionalism."

PHILLIP SALVADOR. Natanong din kay Kris ang isyu tungkol sa sa paghahain ng warrantless arrest sa ex-live in partner niya at ama ng anak niyang si Joshua, si Phillip Salvador.

"You know, we are no longer involved in each other's life so, it's off for me to comment," maikli niyang pahayag.

"Ayokong mag-comment. We never fought but we're just not close. So, yun. So, huwag na lang ako mag-comment talaga. Kasi anyway, basta yun na yun. Quiet Krissy," nakangiting sabi niya sa sarili.

HER SONS' CRUSHES.

"KC knows kasi si Juan Sarte fix me for this and normally does my ano... Sinabi na ni Juan sa kanya na siya yung first crush ng anak ko. Sabi ko, 'At least, you have a good taste, honey!'" tawa ulit ni Kris.

NEW BUSINESS.

Basta sabi niya mangyayari 'yan. Mga five years siguro. Siyempre pag-iipunan mo. Meron siyang nakitang land na kailangan naming i-develop. Pero ang sinabi niya, super ang lalaki na raw ng mango trees. E, di siyempre, ang come on mo mango picking. ‘Yan ang future plan namin," excited na sabi ni Kris.

Court tells GMA-7, ABS-CBN to Submit Memo for Case Resolution

The Quezon City Regional Trial Court has ordered GMA GMA Network Inc. and ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. to submit their rejoinders so that it can decide on the GMA's petition to stop ABS-CBN from airing stories or plugs regarding the alleged ratings manipulation.

The court said the affidavits should be filed by Monday next week.

ABS-CBN was scheduled to present three more new witnesses during Tuesday’s hearing but Judge Henri Inting wanted to...

to submit the case for resolution, saying that he already heard enough evidence.

ABS-CBN lawyer Regis Puno said the company wanted to present more witnesses but the judge felt the evidence was already sufficient for him to make a ruling.

Lawyer Gener Asuncion of GMA, on the other hand, maintained that ABS-CBN should stop airing any plug and story pending the resolution of the case.

On Monday, an ABS-CBN informant told the court that the metered homes of research firm TNS-Trends in Bacolod City were also allegedly targeted for tampering by a local TV network.

Informant Johnny Aliguin told the court that he and his companions were instructed by Jonathan Cabillon, station manager of RGMA Iloilo, to look for metered homes of AGB Nielsen Media Research Philippines and TNS Philippines in Bacolod City.

GMA, however, dismissed Aliguin’s testimony as nothing but a tall tale.

Aliguin earlier said that he was hired by RGMA, which manages GMA Network’s provincial stations, to locate and bribe AGB panel homes in Bacolod City allegedly in an effort to tamper TV ratings in that area.

Aliguin said that his group was able to locate and bribe metered homes of both AGB Nielsen and TNS Trends in Bacolod. He said his group offered groceries and cash to convince panel home members to switch to a rival channel.

He said he was later instructed to abandon the alleged illegal operations and focus on AGB’s metered homes.

TNS has begun setting-up operations for television ratings but it has yet to release its data.

ABS-CBN to GMA-7: Cable and Free TV Ratings Non-Issue

The disparity between the ratings of ABS-CBN in cable and non-cable households is a "non-issue" according to an ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network official.

Vivian Tin, ABS-CBN Research and Business Analysis chief, disputed claims by

network rival GMA Network, Inc. that ABS-CBN is using its cable TV resources to manipulate ratings in cable TV households to its advantage.

GMA Network earlier issued an official statement noting the disparity between its ratings in households with cable TV and those with free TV, saying that:

"There is absolutely no truth to ABS-CBN’s claim that it was the first one who initiated the move to clean up the TV ratings system. For about five (5) years now, GMA Network has been complaining to AGB Nielsen [Editor: AGB Nielsen is a media research firm that tracks TV ratings] why the ratings of GMA Network’s programs are so low in cable TV households but so high in non-cable TV homes, a situation that does not obtain in ABS-CBN’s programs."

The statement also said that since ABS-CBN either owns or has a controlling stake in the dominant cable companies in the country, it would be able to access information as to which homes are fitted with AGB Nielsen ratings meters.

Technical issue

Tin however said that there's a simple explanation for why GMA Network shows do better ratings-wise in households with free TV, while ABS-CBN has higher ratings in homes with cable TV: signal reception and bandwidth.

Tin explained that ABS-CBN airs over Channel 2, which “is the lowest of the low band channels", making its free TV signal vulnerable to "noise", meaning, electronic and physical interference.

“Kapag low band ang channel, it’s vulnerable to noise... noise that we couldn’t hear as humans but electronically the TV picks up… (the noise) will cause the TV (picture to be) blurry.”

“In the fringes where the signal is not as strong, the noise - the noise of electricity, telecommunication activities, even rain and wind - interfere with the low band frequency. There are areas where homes would have snowy reception of ABS-CBN. In these areas we will lose in terms of ratings," she said.

Tin said that since the free TV reception of Channel 2 is bad in certain areas, it's not surprising that those households would tend to switch to programs on GMA Network, since they would get clearer picture and sound quality.

She said that homes fitted with cable TV would have clear reception of ABS-CBN shows “because cable takes away the noise.”

"In an environment when the receptions of all channels are clear, our ratings tend to be higher," Tin said, adding that "in an environment that is patas (fair), because (all channels are) clear, we always win,” she said.

Tin said certain measures have been taken by ABS-CBN to improve the reception of the network in non-cable homes. For a long-term solution, Tin said ABS-CBN plans to introduce digital television.

“We have a cable company because it makes good business strategy. That’s another part of the market... hindi naman namin ginawa ang cable para gumawa ng iba (we didn’t engage in this business just to do something illegal),” she said.

Bribery and corruption

ABS-CBN has filed a P63-million civil suit against AGB Nielsen for its alleged failure to probe reports of an organized, systematic and well-funded attempt to cheat in the ratings.

ABS-CBN filed the case after an informant approached the network and confessed that he was hired to find and bribe households equipped with AGB Nielsen meters in Bacolod, in order to influence their viewing habits.

A court has dismissed the civil suit based on technicality but ABS-CBN has filed a motion for reconsideration.

“Bribery of homes to change viewing habit, that one is the real corruption issue,” said Tin.

Tin assured that once enough evidence has been gathered ABS-CBN will conduct its own investigation.

Kung Fu Kids, Still the No. 1 Show in ABS-CBN ( February 1-3 TV Ratings)

The love month officially opened with Eat Bulaga! and Marimar once again dominating their respective timeslots. Robin Padilla and Regine Velasquez, in the meantime, jump-started February by providing the perfect mood for Valentine's day.

For February 1, Friday, the

noontime show of Tito, Vic & Joey, Eat Bulaga!, garnered a 25.6 percent rating to beat Daisy Siete's 22.9 percent rating. Notching the third spot was My Only Love, which collected a 16.2 percent rating, edging out another GMA-7 program, Come Back Soon-Ae (16 percent).

Two GMA-7 programs, Takeshi's Castle and Maging Akin Ka Lamang, for their part, were locked for the fifth spot, with both programs carrying an identical 15.8 percent rating.

Kris Aquino's three-week old Wheel of Fortune continues to fare well, this time securing the No. 8 position, on the strength of its 13.8 percent rating. Following closely was Edu Manzano's Pilipinas, Game KNB? with 13.5 percent. Completing the daytime race was SiS with 11.6 percent.

Despite facing serious competition, Marimar, Kamandag, Coffee Prince, Zaido, and 24 Oras still maintained their tight grip on the top five positions. Leading the pack is still the duo of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, collecting 43.1 percent for Marimar.

Kamandag, starring Richard Gutierrez (who recently celebrated his 24th birthday and 7th year anniversary in showbiz), remained at close second with 37.1 percent.

ABS-CBN's Kung Fu Kids emerged as the top performer among the three new programs under the Kapamilya stable.

Trailing behind 24 Oras, Kung Fu Kids nailed the sixth spot with 25.7 percent rating. Not to be left behind, Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual's Lobo was in hot pursuit with 25.4 percent.

TV Patrol World snared the No. 8 slot. The slot was expected to go to Palos, which had been promoted as part of the formidable ABS-CBN primetime trio which includes Kung Fu Kids and Lobo. TV Patrol World got 20.9 percent; Palos got 19.4 percent.

After weeks of pale performances, StarTalk again asserted its dominance, this time snatching the third spot via its 16.5 percent rating. Its rival, Entertainment Live, was lodged in the bottom of the race with a rating of 8.9 percent, which was good for the ninth spot.

With both shows not giving an inch, Takeshi's Castle and Volta shared the fifth spot, carrying identical 15.5 percent ratings.

Robin Padilla and Regine Velasquez's romantic film, Till I Met You, conquered Sunday's program ratings. Riding on the crest of its 18.8 percent rating, Till I Met You topped SOP's 17.5 percent showing.

Showbiz Central's 16.4 percent rating, on the other hand, edged out The Buzz's 9.9 percent rating. This, despite the strong lineup presented by the trio of Boy Abunda, Cristy Fermin and Ruffa Gutierrez, particularly their phone interview with former actress-singer Jessa Zaragosa. Jessa lashed out at comedienne Rufa Mae Quinto for allegedly spreading lies about her and her husband Dingdong Avanzado in Rufa Mae's tell-all interview in the February issue of YES! magazine.

Mel & Joey remained unfazed at the top spot, beating out Kap's Amazing Stories [26.7 percent] and Tok! Tok! Tok! [25.7 percent]. Carrying a slim lead, Mel Tiangco and Joey de Leon garnered a 27.5 percent rating, consequently propelling them to the No. 1 slot.

RGMA President Mike Enriquez Involve in Ratings Manipulation ?

Two former RGMA employees came out in TV Patrol last night, February 1, 2008, to shore up the alleged ratings manipulation done by GMA Network.

Romie Diamanse, former program director and OIC-station manager of Campus Radio (an FM radio station owned and operated by GMA Network, Inc.) in Iloilo, and Francis Casumpang, also a former program director of Campus Radio, cited the alleged involvement of broadcaster and RGMA President Mike Enriquez in GMA-7's "special operations" to manipulate media ratings in the provinces of Iloilo and Bacolod.

Both claimed that Kapuso network spends ....

20,000 to 30,000 pesos per month for legitimate promotional activities. But the cost shoots up to as much as 200,000 pesos due to the "special operations." Expenses cover fuel costs, jeepney rentals, cell phone cards for runners, and bribes for survey company insiders.

"Hindi lang yung radio, yung DYFI sa amin, yung GMA radio or Campus Radio sa Iloilo yung pinapakinggan ninyo. Dapat yung TV Station din, dapat ay GMA 6. Survey periods for TV, eh, naiba for radio. So, they just attend to the field coordinators sa TV. And they just tell me, ‘Okay na, dude...okay na kahit yung TV sa atin," Casumpang said.

If the covered area is bigger, the budget is increased.

He added, "Kung meron ngang tao na medyo considered na leader sa specific or identified survey area sa sasabihin niya, bibilhin natin iyan kahit magkano. He can name or she can name his or the price. Basta, he or she can assure na magiging number one tayo sa area niyan."

Diamanse affirmed Casumpang's allegations. He also said that GMA 6 Iloilo and Campus Radio share manpower to conduct the "special operations." Radio and TV surveys were done on separate periods.

"Sinundan namin...Lahat halos ng lugar sa buong Iloilo ginalugad namin, kumilos kami. Humingi sila ng permiso kung puwede magkabit ng electronic device for monitoring purposes," Diamanse said.

Casumpang said that orders were issued by a certain Jonatahan Cabillo, a station manager for TV in Iloilo.

Cabillon was previously identified by Fred Alejaga, one of the three witnesses previously presented by ABS-CBN and also a former station manager of Super Radyo Bacolod.

It will be recalled that Alejaga presented documents, specifically a Powerpoint presentation, showing that legitimate and "special operations" were conducted separately to assure that RGMA's ratings would increase in the province. He also said that GGMA-Manila had given the "special operations" a go-signal.

Alejaga claimed that the instruction to them was, "Media coordinators kayo. Binibigyan din natin yung ating mga assets sa barangay. So there's no way na hindi tayo magta-top o mag-number one sa radio survey. ‘Pag nahuli yung special ops, deny. This is a legitimate promotional activity, so kami namimigay lang ng gift for our loyal listeners or viewers."

This was seconded by another witness, Donard Nojas: "Alam talaga ni Mike Enriquez yun. Dahil ang katulad sa akin, I was receiving instructions from our vice president for AM operations, ni Ma'am Susan Alino, who was based in Cebu. So, si Ma'am Susan naman ang nag-report kay Sir Mike."

The former RGMA employees said they no longer believe in the ratings, and advised the advertisers to conduct independent surveys instead of relying on the data supplied by media research firms.
